Recycled Wool Throw - 130cm x 170cm - Saffron
It's hard to believe that the beautiful saffron yellow colour of this herringbone style wool throw is the natural result of the recycled wool garments used to make it - no dyes are added of any kind. Once respun and woven, the recycled fabric makes a great quality throw with a felt like feel and just the right amount of weight, adding classic charm to any space or decor.
Why we love it
- Skilfully produced from recycled wool clothing - reducing the amount ending in landfill
- Responsibly produced in India by a company with auditable social certification standards for decent workplaces
- So many uses - in the car as a travel blanket or picnic rug, or at home to throw over a sofa or tired-looking chair
Made responsibly in India.
Dry Clean.
Approximately 130cm x 170cm.
Unwanted clothing is collected through recycling programmes around the world, and shipped back to India for sorting and reworking. Although initially this seems a long way for the clothing to travel, it is actually an advantage for the many container ships returning to India to have some weight on board.
Once it arrives in India the clothing is sorted into fabric type and colour. The producer uses wool and wool mix clothing only and the resulting fabric is a minimum of 65% wool, 35% other fibres (usually polyester and nylon). The clothing is cleaned, broken down, made into fibres, spun into yarn and then woven into fabric. The fabric colour is a result of the original wool fabrics - no dyes are added.
The cloth used to make the throws is made by an SA8000 certified company. The SA8000 standard is one of the world’s first auditable social certification standards for decent workplaces. It sets out the requirements to be met by organisations, including the establishment or improvement of workers’ rights, workplace conditions and an effective management system. Audits are carried out annually. They are also compliant with ISO:9001:2008 quality management system standards.
Old woollen garments are sadly usually disposed of in landfill sites. When wool decomposes it produces methane, a gas that contributes to the greenhouse effect. By recycling wool, it not only gives it another life, but also methane production is reduced because less material goes to landfill sites.
Materials: Minimum 65% wool 35% other fibres.
