Jute plants are easy to grow, have a high yield per
acre and, unlike cotton, have little need for pesticides and fertilisers. Jute thrives during the rainy season in Bangladesh, which lasts from June to October. The plants are ready to harvest in just four to six months, after the flowers have shed.

The fibres lie beneath the bark, surrounding the woody core. To extract this, the jute bundles are submersed in water for a few allowing the fibres to loosen and separate from the stalk. The fibres are then stripped, washed, and dried to become the raw material used to create ReSpiin baskets.

The remaining jute stalks can be used in a similar way to wood pulp or work well as a renewable cooking fuel source.

Beyond their practical applications, jute plants also offer environmental benefits. During growth, they absorb three times more CO2 than the average tree, converting it into oxygen. Additionally, the leaves and roots left after harvest enrich the soil with micronutrients, maintaining fertility. Jute is also 100% biodegradable.

The sewing thread used in this product is made of 70% polyester and 30% cotton. It cannot be 100% cotton thread as this will not tolerate the sewing machine tension needed to be able to stitch the jute into place.
